Team Profiling

Raising awareness and enhancing communication

Profiling heightens awareness of individual differencesTeam profiling is a hugely effective way of illustrating team dynamics - highlighting preferences and demonstrating how each individual's behaviour affects (and is affected by) every other member of the team. In essence, it involves exploring patterns of behaviour that characterise each person's responses in relation to those of other team members. These behavioural patterns indicate each person's preferred ways of acting, reacting and interacting within the team.

The methodology used to generate the team profile depends upon issues and objectives, but starts with a simple self-perception questionnaire, the results of which indicate how people see themselves within the team. Colleagues often have a totally different perception - a major learning point in itself!

The next stage involves measuring the preferred behavioural patterns against a number of "pure" roles. Although none of these pure roles are likely to exist in isolation in real life, they help to illustrate how our perceptions of our colleagues are a based upon a dynamic combination of individual preferences.

Team Profiling has nothing to do with ability... it is purely about preference.

The major value of team profiling lies in the fact that it enables both individuals and teams to increase their awareness of the natural preferences that exist within the team. This increased awareness enables people to...

  • Modify patterns of behaviour... Being aware of our natural preferences allows us to make informed decisions about whether to modify our behaviour, on occasions, for the good of the team.
  • Put processes in place... Once we know the profile, we can design processes that will encourage a specific pattern of behaviour that does not occur naturally.
  • Understand personal differences... Recognising potential misunderstandings between conflicting roles is the first stage towards resolving them.
  • Handle conflict positively... Understanding how we affect other people and what motivates them, allows us to address the potential for conflict at an early stage.
