*THE MERLIN ENIGMA
"Near the village of Beddgelert, in the rugged heart of Snowdonia, lies a rocky hillock known as Dinas Emrys, at the top of which are the scant but obvious remains of a fortified tower. Legend has it that this was the seat of the Emrys family, the most famous member of which was Merlin, wizard to the court of King Arthur. Indeed, some Arthurian scholars believe that the valley in which Dinas Emrys lies may be the Vale of Avalon, and that the nearby Llyn Dinas could be the lake into which Arthur threw Excalibur after his last (and sadly unsuccessful) battle."
"There is an associated legend that tells of Merlin's fight with a Dragon - and a subsequent curse by a not-very-nice warlock called Cidwm. Your objective is to trace the legend, solve the enigma contained within, and break the curse."
Best described as an adventurous version of our popular Enigma team building exercise, the Merlin Enigma revolves around a fictional Arthurian legend and is based in central Snowdonia. The complex scenario involves a variety of business-related activities, from planning and problem solving, to communication and negotiation, whilst the physical component comprises a walk of about 12kms through stunning mountain scenery. Teams are faced with three tasks during the walk, two of which are fairly adventurous, the other being a simple problem solving task but in a memorably unique location! We never force or coerce participants into doing anything they do not wish to do, so the more adventurous tasks are offered on a strictly voluntary basis and do not have to be completed by every member of the team in order to guarantee success. Additionally, although this is arguably our most physical teamday, it is still achievable by all but the most unfit! Due to the nature of the tasks, the scenario, and the stunning surroundings, this a refreshingly different, highly enjoyable way to bond a new team or reward an existing one.
In order to get the most from this team building experience, we recommend it be run as a residential training event. This allows people to arrive the night before, and do the initial planning after dinner so that the following day is left free for the "purposeful journey". An optional further night after the event allows participants to celebrate and recover (!), and we can, if desired, spend the following morning taking them through a facilitated evaluation, the event finishing after lunch. When run together as described, this makes an extremely cost-effective training package.
